Bedford County EMS
Department Information
Bedford County EMS is a County owned Advanced Life Support Service. We currently operate 4 ALS units on a 24 on - 48 off schedule.

We respond to more than 4700 calls annually from 3 stations covering a geographic area of approximately 450 square miles. Eighty percent of our call volume originates in the City of Shelbyville, which has a population of approximately 16,786, with the remaining 18,966 population of Bedford County accounting for the remainder of calls.

An EMS Board governs BCEMS but the Director of EMS has ultimate responsibility for the Service. Our Assistant Director is responsible for daily operations and supervises 5 company officers. We currently have a full time staff of 25 EMTs and Paramedics. (see organizational chart) We utilize PRN EMTs and Paramedics to cover vacation and sick time. Our Administrative Assistant is responsible for insurance billing, collections, and accounts payable.



Requirements for prospective EMS applicants
Applicants must possess:

1. A high school diploma or GED certificate, and successfully complete an EMT or Paramedic program that meets or exceeds the United States Department of Transportation and State of Tennessee requirements.
2. A valid Tennessee driver’s license with F endorsement and excellent driving record.
3. Current BLS Healthcare provider level certification. Paramedics must complete Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) or Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).
4. Pass BCEMS physical agility test, oral interview and written exam.
5. All employment is pending a negative drug screen.

Salary Information

  • Paramedics beginning rate: $33,368.52 annually.

  • EMTs beginning rate: $27,903.28 annually.

  • The County typically gives a 3% cost of living raise annually.

  • BCEMS awards an additional 2% when specific educational requirements are met annually.

    Bedford County EMS uses top of the line equipment such as Phillips MRX monitors, Type 3 ALS response units and PCR for reporting data. We are committed to ongoing training on the latest EMS procedures and technologies.
